Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Coaching news
We could say he’s walking in his father’s shoes; Ryan Saunders had the interim tag removed from his title.  Saunders took over the Wolves at the time Tom Thibodeau was fired, he's the son of long-time Wolves coach the late Flip Saunders.  In Portland the Blazers signed Terry Stotts to a long-term extension.  Terms were not made public, but it would appear management was satisfied with the job he performed.
The biggest game of his life
Warriors forward Alfonzo McKinnie wasn’t the leading scorer, he only chalked up 12 points while shooting 41% from the floor.  I didn’t have my eyes on him for the entire game, but I don’t believe he embarrassed himself.  This game provided us proof of his confidence and his coaching staff.  It’s possible McKinnie might not be a Warrior in October, but he certainly experienced the biggest game of his life on Monday evening against the Blazers.
A deep, deep draft
We read the winter of 2018 and into that spring how deep the talent pool was for the 2018 NBA draft.  Those who provide the information for us certainly proved to be insightful.  The NBA 1st Team All-Rookie for 2018 is as follows:

DeAndre Ayton      (1)
Marvin Bagley III   (2)
Luka Doncic          (3)
Jaren Jackson Jr.   (4)
Trae Young           (5)
How unusual was this honor, the last time the first five picks made the All-Rookie team was the 1984-85 season?

I’m doing him
Offering you a story without providing any evidence, that’s the repetition for ESPN’s resident savant Stephen A. Smith.  We read ESPN is contemplating changes regarding The Jump and NBA Countdown, the report indicated the change involved studio personalities.  It might be added this account did not originate by ESPN.  There was a claim the NBA vetoed Jeff Van Gundy being added as a permanent studio addition to a program.  Guess who else was scratched for a program……Stephen A. Smith.  It was reported the NBA also said nay to him being part of a program.  I’m just doing him, reporting an account without providing you any sort of documentation.
“Who is that old guy?”
The above question was asked of me by an acquaintance unfamiliar with NBA broadcasters.  He was referring to 85-year old Hubie Brown longtime analyst for ESPN/ABC.  The old guy is in the college and Naismith Hall of Fame, he began a coaching career as an assistant with the Bucks back in 1972.  From Milwaukee he would become head coach of the ABA Kentucky Colonels and remain there until the ABA-NBA merger.
The Colonels were one of the ABA teams not included in the merger, Brown moved on to become head coach of the Hawks and Knicks.  He might have the longest period between coaching jobs, he became an analyst for USA Network in the 1980’s at the time they telecast the NBA and moved on from there to additional broadcast work for CBS.  In 2002 after 16 years on the sidelines the Grizzlies tapped Brown to become head coach of the team.
He managed to turn the franchise from a losing one to a playoff contender. Early in the 2005 season Brown citing health reasons would resign as coach of the Grizzlies and return to broadcasting once again.  Just imagine, graduating college in the days of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain and still active in the game in the 21st Century.  We might say he’s seen it all.  I bet next time there was no requirement by my friend to ask, “Who is that old guy?”
